Celebrating 25 years of Heart Transplantation at Freeman Hospital A Golf Tournament followed by an evening's celebration was held in Tynemouth Golf Club in May to celebrate the first heart transplant at the Freeman hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne. Both the day and evening events were a huge success. The day started with a Stableford Golf competition with 24 teams of 4 players and managed to raise over £2,000 which was partly achieved by local businesses sponsoring holes, ladies section of the Golf Club running a raffle (with donated prizes) and monetary donations from others as well as the great golfing teams who took part. The majority of the teams were made up from local businesses and members of Tynemouth Golf Club the others were guests from Papworth Hospital (combined age of 276 years), transplant patients from Leeds, the Midlands and as far away as Wales. There was also a team of doctors from the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. These being: Barry Cumberledge - Chief Echo Department, Mark Crompton - Perfusionist, Thassi Pillay - Consultant Transplant Surgeon and Simon Haynes - Consultant Aneasethist. The winning team was David Bavaird, Doug Walker, Eddy Stothert and Adrian Shooter with a very impressive Stableford score of 114 points. The evening's entertainment was provided by GADGI with brilliant music for all the shinanigans. On behalf of myself, Willy Smith, Vice Captain of Tynemouth Golf Club and Christine Marsh, (Graham's wife) we would like to thank everyone who gave their time, money and added their names to the organ donor register and for making a day to remember that Graham would have been proud of. Special thanks must go to Mr Pillay of Freeman Hospital for his speech and presentations. |
